The first step in selecting a quality skylight is to determine what your roof pitch is. The roof pitch is the angle of the roof and will determine the installation method for your skylight. There are many different types of skylights from curb mounted, deck mounted, self-flashed models, roof windows and sun tunnels. Check with your Williams fenestration consultant if you are not sure of the roof pitch. Next you need to determine the performance capabilities that you want for the skylight. Some skylights allow for natural ventilation while others are fixed. You have options for manually controlling the skylight or selecting electrical controls. Some of the glazing within the skylight might be tinted others are clear depending on the level of daylight control you desire. Velux also offers built in blinds or electrochromic glass options that provide the maximum use of daylighting control. Once you have chosen the type of skylight now you need to size the skylight. Size is going to depend on the type of roof construction you have and the spacing of the rafters or trusses. If your looking for something unique our fenestration consultants can help you customize the skylight to suit your needs. When selecting the size of the unit it is important to think about the ceiling style of your home. Some ceilings are flat others are sloped or cathedral in design. The type of skylight construction will vary based on the roof design and the amount of daylight you require. To view a skylight sample stop by one of our show rooms and let a Williams representative take a look at the plans for your next project. We will be happy to help determine what style and type of skylight best suits your daylighting needs. |
